Even Odd Functions
Is the cubic , y = x3 an even or odd function?
It is an odd function. y = (-2)3 = (-2)(-2)(-2) = -8 and y = 23 = (2)(2)(2) = 8
If the function's graph contains the coordinate (2, 8) and the coordinate (-2, -8) then it is an odd function.
Mathematically we would state that if (x, y) is on the graph then (-x, -y) is also on the graph.
The graph of an odd function is symmetrical to the origin.
Is the cubic a one to one function?
Yes because each y has 1 x values . For example unlike the parabola a y value of 8 has only an x value of 2 associated with it.
