Transformation
Non Rigid Transformation
How do we change the shape of the y = x2 graph?
The first transformation is to reduce the distance between the sides of the parabola and the y axis. This is called a horizontal shrinking. This is accomplished by changing the coefficient of x2.
What is the present coefficient? answer
There are two possibilities. The coefficient can be made larger than one or smaller than one.
Lets make it larger so the function now becomes y = 6x2. Will the distance between the sides and the y axis
decrease (shrink) or increase (called horizontal stretching)? Try to answer the question and then check the answer. answer
