A ball is launched from ground level and forms a parabolic path based on the function f(x) = -.2x2 + x + 3
- What is the maximum height the ball reaches?
This is a parabola and hence its vertex is the highest point. The vertex's formulae for the x value is -b/2a
Hence the vertex's x value is -1/2(-.2) which equals 1/.4 = 2.5
Substitute that into -.2x2 + x + 3 = -.2(2.5)2 + 2.5 + 3 = 4.25
Therefore the vertex is located at (2.5, 4.25) and the highest point is the y value of 4.25 units
